Raymond T. Jones, age 75, of Westminster, Maryland, died unexpectedly on Friday, November 29, 2013 at his home.
Born January 20, 1938 in Pennsylvania he was the son of the late Raymond and Hazel Jones. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Joyce P. Jones.
Raymond was a graduate of Shamokin High School in Pennsylvania and attended the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. He was a star athlete on the football team of his high school and received an athletic football scholarship to college. He left college for a time to join and serve his country in the U.S. Marine Corps. He then went on to undergraduate study at Old Dominion University and received his Master’s degree in Marine Biology from the University of Delaware, and his Ph.D. in Pathology from the University of Maryland. He worked for most of his career in teaching and research and became a Professor of Pathology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He was a cancer researcher with the University of Maryland and N.I.H. He wrote and published several books on electronic microscopy. He served on the policy board of the National Aquarium in Baltimore and went on numerous excursions to collect sharks. Ray was an avid horseman who raised thoroughbred race horses, fox hunter, and member of the Pleasant Valley Lions Club where he was a Melvin Jones Fellow.
Surviving in addition to his wife are cousins, Janet Bulow of Hagerstown, Jerry Jones of Erie, PA, Michael Zigler and wife Angelina of Delaware; and numerous other cousins.
