Mr. Raymond “Fred” Martin, 73, of Taneytown, MD died suddenly Monday, March 17, 2008 at Carroll Hospital Center.
Born February 12, 1935 in Hagerstown, MD, he was the son of the late Raymond W. and Margaret (Brewer) Martin. He was the dearly beloved husband of Phyllis Ann (Wheeler) Martin. They were married 54 years.
He was employed with the B&O Railroad 1953-1975, during which time he took leave to serve in the U.S. Army 1958-1960. He was stationed in Germany. In 1975 he joined the Association of American Railroads and traveled extensively throughout the U.S. and Canada as Manager of Open Top Loading Rules, retiring in 1996.
Fred was a member of Grace United Church of Christ where he served as deacon and member of the property committee. He was a member and past president of the Taneytown Lions Club and was the recipient of the 2005/06 Melvin Jones award. He was a member of Monocacy #203 Masonic Lodge where he served as chaplain and was a member of the Scottish Rite. He was a member and former chaplain of Plymouth Chapter #41, O.E.S. He was a member of the Western Maryland Railroad Historical Society and served as secretary. He was a former member of the B&O Historical Society and a charter member of the B&O Railroad Museum in Baltimore.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by extended family Wendy & David Savelle, Thomas & Mary Wheeler, Richard & Claudia Wheeler and nephew Rick Wheeler, as well as many friends, neighbors and colleagues.
