Raymond E. Morris, 78, of Virginia, IL died Tuesday morning, December 15, 2009 at his residence.
He was born January 25, 1931 in Canton, IL; the son of Roscoe M. and Edith Tompkins Morris. He married Barbara Updike on January 21, 1955 in Chandlerville, IL and she survives.
He is also survived by six children, Michael R. Morris ( Rozella) of Virginia, Mark Morris of Virginia, Toni Lyons (Jim) of Virginia, Tim D. Morris (Shon) of Chandlerville, Thomas G. Morris of Springfield, and Karen L. Clay (Anthony); seven grandchildren, Michelle Weatherby, Bradley Lyons, Keri Lyons, Kenny Morris, Trevor Clay, Kameron Clay, and Chandler Clay; four step grandchildren, Kerry Mundy, Rachel Mundy, Tannon Clay, and Ashton Clay; five great grandchildren; a step great granddaughter; two brothers, Paul Morris (Flossie) of Rushville and Bernard Morris (Gloria) of Reedsport, OR; three sisters, Ruth Morris, Ruby Bell (Dale), and Barbara Bell (Franklin), all of Virginia: and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers, Jim, Asa, Roscoe Jr., and Eugene Morris.
Mr. Morris farmed with his brothers from 1949 to 1961 with his work interrupted from 1952-1954 while he served his country in the US Army stationed in Japan. He worked for the Illinois State Highway Department from 1961 to 1969 and from 1969 was employed at Oscar Meyer (later Excel) in Beardstown until his retirement in 1995. He also served as the custodian for First Presbyterian Church in Virginia from 1976 until 2004. He enjoyed keeping busy and found he enjoyed working whenever possible and walking for exercise. He always found time to be a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church and the Virginia American Legion Post #258.
