Raymond A. Lynch, Jr., 80, died October 13, 2010, in Flagstaff, Arizona. A loving and devoted father and friend, and faithful servant of God, he is survived by his three children, David Lynch of Newport DE, Gay Lynch of Newark DE, and Barbara Samson of Glen Mills PA, their mother, Carolyn Mendenhall of Wilmington, two sons-in-law, David May of Newark DE and Allan Samson of Glen Mills PA, and three grandchildren, Liz May of Wilmington, Ben Samson and Jacob Samson of Glen Mills PA. Ray was predeceased by his parents, Dr. Raymond A. Lynch, Sr. and Elizabeth Campbell Lynch, of Alapocas, and his brother Richard Lynch of Fort Lauderdale FL.
Ray was born in Wilmington and raised in Wilmington and Salem NJ. He was a member of the 200th graduating class of the Wilmington Friends School, in 1948. A gifted musician and avid outdoorsman, Ray entertained his friends and family on the piano, and shared with others his enjoyment of golfing, hunting, fishing, camping, hiking, and boating. After a full and rewarding career in sales, Ray retired in 1990 to Flagstaff AZ, where he built and fulfilled a second career in service to others. He graduated cum laude from Northern Arizona University (NAU) with a BS degree in Sociology in 1994 and served as a peer advisor in Student Support Services.
Ray’s subsequent activities and involvement included serving on the Coconino County Community Action Board, Coconino County Council on Aging, Coconino County Title XX Commission, and Northern Arizona Council of Governments. In addition, Ray was an active volunteer in the Flagstaff Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, a hospice and hospital volunteer at Flagstaff Medical Center, a facilitator for the NAU Four-Corners Science and Math Program for Native American students. He also volunteered at Rainbow Acres (the Southwest’s premier Christian community for adults with developmental disabilities), in the Clavinova Connections Music Program.
Ray was a member of Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church and an associate member of Trinity Heights Methodist Church, both in Flagstaff, and a frequent attendee of Flagstaff Friends Meeting. He was an active participant in Stephen Ministries, the Flagstaff Christian Businessmen’s Association, and an outreach chaplain at the Coconino County Jail in Flagstaff, and the Arizona State Prison in Winslow. He will be greatly missed by his family who loved him dearly.
