Ray W. Jennings passed on Saturday December 11, 2021. Ray lived a remarkable life of over 100 years with too many accomplishments and high points to include here. He was born in Marshalltown, Iowa, on March 15, 1921, to Harry and Merle (Blanchard) Jennings. When the WWII started, Ray left Drake University (completing his education after the war) and enlisted in the Navy (achieving the rank of Lieutenant). A short time later (1943), Ray married the love of his life, Gail A. Bruce, who followed Ray to six different bases as they began their new life together. After his career in the Navy both as a Pilot/Flight Instructor and later in Naval Intelligence, Ray continued in the Naval Reserves for 20 years. In his civilian careers, Ray managed his flight school, worked as an Agent for the Iowa State Bureau of Investigation, and was responsible for Safety and Security for Iowa Power and Light. Even with all his public contributions, Ray was most proud of his accomplishments as a husband and father and was devoted to his wife and three daughters. Ray and Gail were active members of University Christian Church and were long time members of the Castle Club, a social ballroom dancing organization.
Ray is survived by his three daughters, Vicky (Gene) Schafer, Holly (John) Clark, and Marsha (Larry) Castagnoli; four grandchildren, Ryan Clark, Reilly (Michelle) Peterson, Cody (Robin) Schafer, and Brook (Charlie) Lenze; and eight great grandchildren. Ray was preceded in death by his loving wife, Gail, and grandchildren Travis Schafer, Bradley and Tana Peterson, as well as all the loving pets named Tiger.
The family wishes to thank Ramsey Village for their loving care in his final months. Memorial contributions may be made in Ray’s name to either Animal Rescue League of Iowa, Drake University, or Ramsey Village.
