Ranney Leek of Ames, age 102, formerly of Algona, passed away Wednesday, February 5, 2020 at Northridge Village in Ames. Ranney Ferdinand Leek, the son of William and Ida (Bussie) Leek, was born on June 18, 1917 in Burt, Iowa. Ranney graduated from Burt High School in 1938. He served for the United States Army during WWII, entering in 1941. He saw duty in the European Theater in England, North Africa, Italy, France, and Germany. He was honorably discharged in 1945. On June 12, 1949, Ranney was united in marriage to Verdell Riedel in Algona, Iowa. Ranney worked for Pioneer Seed Corn Company for 35 years, mostly in Algona and the Midwest. Starting as a laborer, he worked his way up, ending his career as construction superintendent. Ranney was self-educated as a welder and licensed electrician. After retiring in 1980, Ranney and Verdell loved square dancing with the Titonka Twirlers, camping and spending winters in Florida. Left to cherish Ranney’s memory are his wife, Verdell of Ames; son, Ward (Vickie) Leek of Ames; two granddaughters, Jennifer Peterson and Melissa Serio; two great grandsons, Carter and Dawson Peterson; sister Marlene (Richard) Frambach of Algona and brother Leroy (Shirley) Leeck of Avoca, WI. Ranney was preceded in death by his parents; son Niel; brothers, Arthur Leek, Herbert Leek, William “Toots” Leek, Vernon Leeck and sisters Lena Petronek, Mabel Johnsrud and Isabelle Leek.
