Great Grandma Rachel died Saturday morning in the presence of four generations of children and with her English Cocker Spaniel Noodles in her arms. She was born in Queens New York during the first great depression. Her father in fact worked on Wall Street as a security officer and frequently told of horribly sad tales of individuals who were so devastated by their financial losses, and his success in talking them down, off of high buildings.
In the mid 1940’s Rachel moved to England to study at the University of Edinburgh where she completed undergraduate studies in history and her graduate work in world geography. In 1951, she moved back to New York and taught at the Scarsdale Union Free School District until 1980. After 29 years in public education, Rachel was persuaded by her late husband Richard Godham, a native San Diegan, that the warm weather of southern California would be quite enjoyable.
Richard passed away in November 2000.
Great, Grandma Rachel was an only child. She is survived by two daughters and one son, all of New York, 12 grandchildren and 11 great, grandchildren all from New York and New Jersey.
