R. Berkeley Jacobs, 89, of Middletown, husband of Evelyn (Hotchkiss) Jacobs for sixty two years, passed away on Sunday, October 9th at Middlesex Hospital. Born in and a lifelong resident of Middletown, he was the son of the late Thomas and Francis (Kensel) Jacobs. Berkeley owned and operated the Thomas R. Jacobs Company for many years after his father’s retirement. He was instrumental in the building of the Pine Street Fire Co., the South Farms Library, developing Knowles Avenue and Berkeley Road in Middletown, built the original Dock N’ Dine in Old Saybrook known then as the Sea Gull and many other homes in the area. He was a member of the U.S. Power Squadron, Oddfellows Central Lodge # 12, I.O.O.F. and as an avid horseman was a member of the L.B. Riding Club. Berkeley’s favorite pastime was sitting out in the gazebo in his backyard with his cat A.J. on his lap, enjoying a can of Schaefer watching the birds at the feeder. He had an appreciation for nature and all wildlife.
