Queen Esther Lewis Pitts was born January 26, 1942 in Limestone County to the late Timothy Lewis Jr., and the late Mattie Jolly Lewis Brown. She was the first child of ten children.
Mother Queen Pitts confessed Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age. She was baptized at the age of fourteen and joined New Hope CPCA Church under the leadership of Pastor Moten. Mother Pitts later moved to Trinity, AL where she served under the leadership of Pastor Walter Battle of Love Chapel CME Church. She moved to Somerville, AL and served under the leadership of Pastor Gurley Woods of Ward’s Chapel CME Church. Mother Pitts subsequently joined Springhill M.B. Church, currently known as El Shaddai, where John Z. Gray is the Pastor. After much prayer, Mother Pitts decided to return to her Presbyterian roots and Joined Mt. Zion CPCA Church under the leadership of Pastor James Robinson where she continued her faithful and diligent service to the Senior Choir, Mother’s Board, Missionary Society, Bible Class, and Sunday School.
Mother Pitts was loved by everyone who knew her. And all who were acquainted with her knew of her strong compassion and hunger for the Word of God and her servant’s heart. Mother Pitts worked at Decatur General Hospital for 23 years. Upon retiring, Mother Pitts volunteered at the Priceville Elementary School as a Foster Grandparent giving back and reading to children.
On Thursday, April 4, 2013, our dear mother, Queen, took flight to be with the King of Kings.
She was preceded in death by one son, Billy Joe Pitts Jr.; one sister, Mae Emma Lewis; and two brothers, Roosevelt and Willie Lewis.
She leaves to cherish her memory: A loving and devoted husband, Billy Joe Pitts; two daughters, Shelia Lewis and Doris Holland both of Decatur; two sons, Willie and David Pitts both of Decatur; ten grandchildren and one great- grandchild; four sisters, Mattie Lewis of Huntsville, AL, Mary (Eddie) Marshall, Gloria (Harold) Pearson, Benita (Dwight) Owens, all of Decatur; two brothers, Jessie (Linda) Lewis of Rock Hill, SC, and John (Julia) Lewis of Chattanooga, TN; two aunts; two uncles, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
