Dr. Prentis Byon Vaughn, age 54, passed away in Midland, Texas, on Wednesday, May 25, 2005. Born in Kingsville, Texas, on September 6, 1950, he was the son of Tip Herndon and Lorena Stahl Vaughn. A former resident of Boerne, Byon and his family had lived in Midland for 2 years where they were members of Christ Church Midland (Anglican Communion). Dr. Vaughn was an ER physician at Odessa Regional Hospital, and a physician at West Loop Family Medicine. He was a member of the American College of Emergency Physicians (fellow), the Texas Medical Assoc., the American Medical Assoc., and the Ector County Medical . Vaughn received his medical degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston in 1975. Commissioned as a captain in the U.S. Army in 1973, he was the 1st graduate of an Emergency Medicine Residency program in the state of Texas. Promoted to the rank of major in 1978, he was honorably discharged in 1983. During his military service, he received the Expert Field Medicine Badge and the Flight Surgeon’s Badge, and was the founder and Program Director of the Emergency Medicine Residency at Darnell Army Hospital, Ft. Hood, TX. He was also the Medical Director for numerous other EMS organizations around the state. Among his many honors, he received the Surgeon General’s Physician Recognition Award as Outstanding Physician of the Year-1980; the Army Soldier’s Medal-1981; the Louis Livingston Seaman Award from the Association of Military Surgeons of the United States-1981; the Army Achievement Medal-1982; and the Army Meritorious Service Medal-1982.Preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers, Charles and Tip Vaughn, Byon is survived by his wife, Laura Armstrong Vaughn; Children, Kelly Vaughn Tomasini and her husband, Justin, Brett Vaughn and his wife, Niki, Chelsea Vaughn Hines and her husband, James, and Zachary Vaughn; Grandchildren, Justin Tomasini, Jr., Austin Tomasini, and Loring Tomasini; Mother in Law, Eloise Armstrong; Sister in law and Brother in law, Kelye and Mark Odell, and sister in law, Nancy Trant Vaughn; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
