Mr. Pierce “Pete” Watson Cantey, Jr. died Tuesday, May 1, 2018 at his home in Camden.
Pete was the son of Pierce W. and Emily Shannon Cantey and was born October 20, 1941 in Camden. He graduated from Camden High School and was a graduate of Wofford College in 1963. Pete is survived by his wife, Elizabeth “Pud’n” Cantey and three sons from his first marriage to Oliver Mackey “Nolly” Cantey, Pierce W. “Trey” Cantey, III and wife Merri, Daniel M. Cantey and wife, Daphne, William O. Cantey and wife, Katie; and six grandchildren, Mackey, Helen, John, Jack, Emily, and Ellis. He is also survived by his brother, Ralph S. Cantey (Darlene) and their children, Ralph S. Cantey, Jr. and Emily C. Hughes; sister-in-law, GG Green and husband Davis; and brother-in-law, Danny Mackey and wife, Tootie. Pete adored his grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and his extended family, Elizabeth M. Carter, Thomas W. Marshall, and H. Benthall Marshall, III.
Pete was a certified public accountant in the firm, Cantey, Tiller, Pierce, and Green for 52 years and loved his work. He was an avid and accomplished golfer, a voracious reader, basketball player for his beloved Grace Church and loved to travel and snow ski with his family in Colorado. Pete served on numerous community boards including Kershaw County Hospital, Community Medical Clinic of Kershaw County, Kiwanis Club, Springdale Hall Club, and Camden Country Club. Pete was also one of the founders of the Snipe Club. He was a valuable friend and board member of First Palmetto Bank and Truvista. Pete was also devoted to Grace Episcopal Church and served in many capacities including being a member of the Vestry for many years, Treasurer for Grace Church, and teaching Sunday school as well as being involved with various youth groups.
The family would especially like to thank Reverend Pickett Wall for his continued devotion and prayer. The family would like to also thank Pete’s hospice nurse, Allie and his special caregivers, Betty, Cricket, Liz, Shanaye, Vanessa, Mary Ann, Blanche, Deneika, Doris and Lynn.
