Phyllis P. Wheeler, 92, passed away at her home in Indian Head, MD on November 9, 2015. She was born Phyllis Elaine Porter in Cedar Falls, Iowa, on January 28, 1923. In 1943 she accompanied her parents, Clarence and Florence Porter, to Indian Head where her father was posted by the Navy. Although educated to be a teacher, she began working at the Naval Powder Factory as a science technician, where she met J. Marshall Wheeler whom she married in 1946. Mrs. Wheeler continued working for the Navy at Indian Head while also raising three children. After retiring in 1978, she served as a volunteer with the Episcopal Church Women and the Women of the Moose. When her age prevented those activities, she became an enthusiastic book reader. She was a long time member of St. James Episcopal Church in Indian Head.
Mrs. Wheeler is survived by Marshall Wheeler, her husband of 69 years, and her children James and Nea Wheeler of Darnestown, MD, Elaine and Jim Chaney of Kennesaw, GA, and Craig and Sue Wheeler of Indian Head, MD. She cherished her grandchildren Phillip and Krystina Wheeler, Steven and Caroline Chaney, Valerie Wheeler, and Stacey Wheeler, and great-grandchildren Myles, Madison, and Hailey.
Her family would be grateful for contributions in her memory to the American Diabetes Association.
