Phyllis L. Smith passed away peacefully Friday, January 19, 2018, with her family and friends by her side. Her family and dear friends sent her off with hugs, kisses, laughter and stories of the past. She was greeted in heaven by her beloved husband Roy and her daughter, Nancy.
Phyllis was born July 22,1935, in Kalamazoo, MI, daughter of Merritt and Gertrude (Elgersma) Holt She had been a lifelong Kalamazoo area resident and employed at The Upjohn Company for 32 dedicated years before retiring. She was united in marriage to the love of her life Roy Smith on June 28,1955 and was together for 59 years.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Roy Smith, brother, Milan Robert Holt, sister, Ida Mae Cutshaw, and daughter, Nancy Worthington.
Phyllis is survived by her daughter’s. Amy Smith, Karen (Ted) Hammond, grandchildren, Abby Hammond, Lyndsay Hammond, Tyler (Jennifer) Worthington, and several nieces and nephews.
One of Phyllis’ greatest joys was renovating the farmhouse with her husband and relishing in the interior design with her incredible sense of style. She also had a strong passion for creating beautiful flower gardens. Her generous and compassionate nature, coupled with her love of flowers was evident when she readily shared flowers from her own garden to help start others. Whenever Phyllis was around, her infectious smile, love of laughter and warm heart would light up the room. She was a “bright light on earth,” Her wonderful sense of humor endeared her to everyone she came in contact with and is a great testament to the many lasting friendships she held over the years. She was a warm, compassionate woman who always went out of her way to help others – no matter what!
