Phyllis G. Sims, 90, of Elkhart, passed away on Tuesday, August 30, 2022, at the Center for Hospice Care in Mishawaka. She was born on January 5, 1932, in Muskegon, MI to the late Rex and Grace (Adams) Bowers.
Phyllis is also preceded in death by her loving husband, Merle L. Sims and brothers, Eugene N. and Terrance R. Bowers. She is survived by her children, Kenneth M. Sims of Las Vegas, Mary Lou (Jerry) Carman of Elkhart, and Kathy (Rick) Cassel of Panama City, FL; 8 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In accordance with Phyllis’ wishes, cremation was chosen and will take place at Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St. in Elkhart. The family kindly requests that no flowers be given and that no services will be taking place at this time.
Phyllis was a hard worker who was dedicated to supporting her family in everything they did throughout their life. She worked as an insurance agent for Chase Bank for many years prior to retiring. Phyllis married Merle L. Sims, on September 2, 1951, after he bravely served in World War II. She additionally worked for Youth for Christ and volunteered her time at lifeline for over 10 years.
Phyllis put her faith in the Lord above all things and was a member of First Baptist Church in Elkhart since 1951. Later in life, she attended Grace Baptist Church with her daughter, Mary Lou. In her spare time, Phyllis enjoyed traveling to visit her children and grandchildren, was an avid reader, enjoyed cooking and baking for her family, and gardening. Phyllis will be dearly missed by her loving family.
