Phyllis C. James, a resident of Azusa for more than 50 years, passed away October 6, 2015 at the age of 89.  She was born in Oronogo, Missouri on November 12, 1925 and lived there until her graduation from high school.  She was the valedictorian of her graduating class and skipped a grade, graduating at the age of 16.

After living a few years in Kansas City, she moved to Los Angeles and married her husband Raymond, in 1943, who was then serving in the Marine Corps in the Pacific.  They were married for 63 years.  When the war ended, she put her own desire to continue her education on hold and chose to financially support her family while her husband completed his education at UCLA.  After her two children completed their college degrees, she decided to pursue her own college education at Citrus College.   She demonstrated the same academic ability as she had in high school by being named salutatorian of her class, and the top English student, all while working full time as a manager for the Department of Motor Vehicles.  She retired from the DMV in 1984 after a 20 year career. She enjoyed reading, painting and watching college football, particularly UCLA.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond, in 2005 and is survived by her sons Dixon (DJ) (William) of Azusa and Terry (Barbara), of Three Rivers, CA, and numerous nieces and nephews.
