Walker and Cass County loses another pioneer; Phyllis B. Croff.  Phyllis passed away peacefully on Monday, February 24, 2014 at the May Creek Senior Living Campus in Walker, Minnesota.  She was born on December 12, 1918 to Roscoe and Hilda Croff in Walker, Minnesota.  She was the youngest of the four Croff girls and has resided in Walker her entire life.

Phyllis graduated from Walker Public School in 1937.  In 1939 she was married to Edward Arthur Shenk of Long Lake, Minnesota.  They had one son, Arthur Raymond Shenk who was born in 1940.  In the 1950’s Phyllis started working outside of the home.  She first worked at the Gamble store and then at several clothing stores and souvenir shops.  Her first husband Art passed away in 1967.  She decided to apply at AhGwahChing in the nursing department.  She was at AhGwahChing until she retired.

In 1970 she was married to Ray Krueger, a long time Walker resident.  They were together for 19 years until Ray’s passing in 1989.

After retirement, Phyllis became active in the Whistle Stop senior citizens group.  She was elected President, during her tenure she oversaw the expansion of the building which has doubled the size of the facility.  Phyllis knew much of the local history so she became involved with the Cass County Historical Society.  She served as president of the Board of Directors.  She also served on the Council on Aging.  She was also very active in the American Legion for over 60 years and was elected President of the American Legion Auxiliary.

Phyllis was an avid fisherman.  She enjoyed the outdoors and spent many happy hours going after the illusive Walleye and Trout.  She was very good at knitting and crocheting, her family has many pieces she has made over the years.

Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, Roscoe and Hilda, son; Arthur (Ray) Shenk and husbands; Art and Ray.

She leaves behind a daughter-in-law; Lois, two grandchildren; David Shenk and Gina Sinaniz and 8 great grandchildren, all of California.
