Phoebe Lindsey Barton, of Eagle, Idaho, passed away on Wednesday, November 9, 2022 at the age of 75 with her husband, Dennis, and her sisters at her side.
Phoebe was born May 22, 1947, in Franklin, Pennsylvania to Harold L. Lindsey, Jr., and Elsie L. Lindsey. At the age of six Phoebe moved West to California with her family, where she began school. Subsequently the Lindsey’s moved to Arizona, then to Idaho where she graduated from high school as valedictorian.
Through part-times jobs, scholarships, diligent studies, and her innate brilliance, she further graduated cum laude from Boise State University in 1969.
In 1970 Phoebe purchased her first home, a little house on Scott Street in Boise, Idaho. She made an earnest money payment of twenty-five dollars!
Phoebe’s career took her to Juneau, Alaska, in 1980, where she made many life-long friends.
From Juneau, she moved to Los Angeles in the spring of 1983. She continued her education at University of California, Los Angeles, and received her PhD degree in June of 1987, with distinction.
In May 1990 Phoebe moved to Colorado where she assumed a professorship in the field of health policy. As a tenured professor at University of Colorado, Phoebe authored a textbook “Understanding the U.S.
It was also in 1990 that Phoebe reconnected with her long-time friend, Dennis R. Barton. In spite of living in different states, their respect and affection for each other quickly blossomed into a romance.
Phoebe and Dennis were married on September 3, 1991, at Waimea Falls, on Oahu’s North Shore, where they honeymooned. Throughout their marriage, they returned many times to Hawaii, a favorite destination.
Phoebe’s love of travel took her to Fiji and Tahiti and, after their marriage, in addition Hawaii, Phoebe and Denny traveled to Lebanon, Grenada, France, England and Canada.
Throughout her life, Phoebe found joy in many different activities, including snow skiing, water skiing, golfing, tennis, hiking, cooking, sewing and decorative needlework. Phoebe loved the Native American and Alaskan cultures. Over the years she collected a great number of museum quality rugs, pottery, basketry, and stunning jewelry. Phoebe had a lifelong passion for reading and learning and, with Dennis, accumulated an impressive library of more than 5,000 books.
Phoebe is survived by her husband of thirty-one years, Dennis R. Barton, and by her brother Fred L. Lindsey of Cascade, Idaho; her sisters Kay Elizabeth Collins of Eagle, Idaho, and Sue E. Giberman (husband Marc) of Boise, Idaho. All of Phoebe’s nieces and nephews, Troy E. Lindsey, Nekolla D. Lindsey, Jakeb L. Lindsey, Hunter S. Lindsey, Andra Elizabeth Buffington (Mike), Jenaye Deane Coski, Brayden Michael Collins, Eslee Deane Collins, Bella Kay Coski; Joseph M. Giberman, Daniel G. Giberman, Phoebe Olivia Giberman, Eden P. S. Giberman, Hilary R. Giberman, Georgie S. R. Giberman, and Leif W.H. Giberman, adored and were adored by Phoebe.
