Phillip D. Langer, age 95, died peacefully on February 27, 2022 at Our House Memory Care, Wisconsin Rapids with his family by his side.

Phil was born August 3, 1926 in Arkdale, WI to Louis and Marion Langer, and was raised on the family farm with his three brothers, Allison, Calvin and Gordon. He attended Adams-Friendship High School and married Lucille Solchenberger on Sept. 28, 1952. They were married for 44 years. They lived and worked on the Langer farm in Arkdale, WI for the first few years of marriage and then moved to Wisconsin Rapids, WI where they lived until Lucille’s death on Sept. 4, 1996.

On July 11, 1998 Phil married Delores (Dee) Scovel whose passion for music brought Phil great joy. They lived in Rock Falls, IL for a time, and later moved to Harlingen, TX where they lived until Dee’s death on Sept. 2, 2010. They enjoyed travel and visiting family. In 2011, Phil moved back to Wisconsin Rapids, WI to be closer to his children.

Phil was a man whose hands and mind were never idle. A tinkerer who dedicated his life to finding  happiness in the people and little projects around him, whether that be tending to his lawn and garden, tumbling rocks with his grandkids, making wine in the basement or building his children a playset by hand with only his imagination as a blueprint. He loved taking videos and pictures of his family which he would develop in his own darkroom. He was an appreciator and collector of arrowheads, iron ore, and bolo ties.

Phil was perfectly content spending all day on his boat waiting for a fish to bite, tending to his plants or working on cars or anything else that could be taken apart and put back together. He was a silly, soft-spoken grandpa who walked on his hands, enjoyed Hee-Haw and Dr. Demento and allowed his grandkids to climb on him and pick on him incessantly, never getting annoyed. He was a strong man who encouraged his grandkids to pull on his chest hair and punch him in the stomach to show them how tough he was. He would find great humor in getting behind them and screeching to make them jump, taking pride in his accomplishment. In his assisted living facility, he teased the aides the same way. Even though he didn’t always know his family by name, his jolly, fun-loving personality remained intact. He was very low-key and easy-going and was a beautiful person who will be sorely missed by many.

He was preceded in death by his parents Louis and Marion Langer, his first wife, Lucille Langer, his second wife, Delores Langer, brothers, Allison Langer, and Calvin Langer, sisters-in-law, Laura (Allison) Langer, Phyllis (Allison) Langer and Lillian (Gordon) Langer and step-children, Sherry Balsley and Joe Scovel.

Phil’s family would like to thank Pastor Michelle Nickodemus and the members of Grace Lutheran Church who came to visit with him and bless him on a regular basis.  We would also like to thank Our House Memory Care and Heartland Hospice for their excellent care and compassion during his stay. We are eternally grateful.
