Philip V. Smith, age 77, of Bloomington, passed away Friday, November 27, 2015 at his residence. Born January 2, 1938, he was the son of the late James W. and Dorothy J. (Waterford) Smith.
Phil, loving known as “Coach” to the masses, was a retired school teacher and coach. He graduated from Hanover College, where he played football and later earned his Masters Degree from Indiana University. He started his teaching career in 1960 at Huntington High School and taught at various schools, including Madison High School, Columbus High School, the old Central Junior High School, Batchelor Middle School and retiring in 1992 after 30+ years from Bloomington High School South.
He was also a wrestling and football coach throughout his teaching career. Even after retiring, his heart drew him back to coaching and he returned to the wrestling program at Batchelor. He also had a passion for cattle, especially the Santa Gertrudis breed. He was past president of the SGBI District #6, where he was very dedicated with the Junior cattle sale each year and involved with the Monroe County 4H Beef Club.
Survivors include his children, Scott (Pam) Smith, Amy (Charlie) Bare, Joe W. (Jill) Smith; Jimmy (Leah) Smith; his sister, Vonda (David) Hittle; his grandchildren: Emily, Ethan, Leah, Maggie, Jenna, Josie, Cooper, Jackson; and his great-granddaughter, Reagan.
