Philip was born on May 13, 1930 in Indianapolis, Indiana to Lindley and Genevieve (Nesbitt) Clark. He graduated from Muncie Burris High School in 1948. Philip attended Earlham College and later graduated from Ball State University.
Philip served his country in the US Air Force during the Korean War. He married Ann Brinson on June 22, 1958.
