Palisade — Philip Mayes, 74, died Saturday, December 5, 2015, at St. Mary’s Hospital following a very brief illness.
He leaves his wife of 52 years, Alma; his children, Toby and Jennifer; his siblings Janice (John) Stone, Cris Winter, and Larry Mayes; as well as many loved nephews and nieces.
Born in Emporia, KS, he lived in Colorado for nearly 50 years and loved it’s outdoor spaces for hunting, fishing, or driving a team of mules.
Though he was raised in a farm community and always felt at peace with his hands in the soil, he had a career as a journeyman pipe fitter. Before that he saw part of the world while with the United States Air Force. For the last 20 years he enjoyed life on a farm surrounded by animals, both wild and domesticated.
Mr. Mayes had a passion for history and animals. These loves came together in his hobby of mule driving. He trained and drove mules, and educated others on mules and their important role in American history.
