Harlingen – Petra De Leon Benavides, 84 years old, was called by the Lord into eternal rest on February 26, 2022, at her daughters’ residence surrounded by family. She was born to Leobardo and Santos De Leon in Harlingen, TX. Petra was married 68 years to Alvino M. Benavides on June 30, 1953, in Harlingen, Texas. They raised four children: Belia (Leo) Zavala, Ricardo (Evelyn) Benavides, Leticia (Jose) B. Galvan, and Minerva (David Sr.) Sanchez.
She is preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Cosme, Ernesto, and Leobardo; one sister, Natalia (Tala) De Leon; and a daughter, Leticia B. Galvan.
She is survived by her husband, her four children, seven grandchildren, Priscilla (Raul Jr.) Flores, Melissa Zavala (Javier Castillo), Leonel Lee (Lindsay) Zavala Jr., David Sanchez Jr. (Lisa Rodriguez), Samantha Ann Sanchez, Richard Alvino Benavides (Adriana Ceja), and Daniel Joseph Benavides; sixteen great-grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren; one sister, Juanita (Juan Sr.) Guillen. She is also survived by extended family that she loved dearly.
Petra was a loving housewife, mother and grandmother. She was known for her crocheting, embroidery, gardening, cooking, and taking care of her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She attended Cross Church with her husband in San Benito, TX.
