Penny Lee Lopez (ne Hansen) passed peacefully into eternity Wednesday, January 16, 2019 with family at her side in Anchorage, Alaska. Penny was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Mom was born to Earl Hansen and Mable Hansen (ne Rodriguez) on May 6, 1949 in the quaint coastal community of San Luis Obispo, California. Although a transplant to Alaska, mom never abandoned her love for her birth-state. Mom frequently shared stories with her children and grandchildren of her devoted love for her mother and father and experiences from her childhood growing up in California.
Mom’s family had property that overlooked the Pacific ocean where her father planted strawberries and peas. Mom recalled, with very fond memory, how she, her father, and mother would often visit their land and spend Sundays eating picnics in the breeze. Later in her young life, mom would meet a handsome young man also from San Luis Obispo- Jerry Lopez. The two fell madly in love and then married, eventually moving their family to Anchorage, Alaska as a result of Dad’s reassignment with the U.S. Army National Guard. Mom and Dad loved Alaska where they raised their modest family of four children. Later, Mom and Dad moved south to the Kenai Peninsula where they adored the quiet seclusion and small-town atmosphere where they could raise JL, the youngest of the four children. An avid dog lover, mom cared for her kids (dogs) as if they were her own children and these kids always knew they were well loved and part of the family. Mom loved her family deeply and they were always on her mind.
She also was very devoted to The Lord, faith and scriptures and could be found, on any given day either listening to scriptures or singing hymns. She was truly a daughter of God. Mom is survived by her children: Christina Fowler of Georgia; Cherri Barrick (Mark Barrick) of Boise, ID; Christopher Lopez (Priscilla Jones-Lopez) of Herriman, UT and Jerry Lopez (Jazmin Lopez) of Kenai, AK; seventeen grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Mom once again takes her place at Dad Jerry’s side. May The Lord bless you both as you make your journey together into eternal realms where darkness is forever banished by the light of love and where oceans of peace and sweet tranquility surround you.
