Peggy Powell, December 29, 2016.

Peggy Preston Powell of Belton, loving Mother, Grandmother and friend, passed away at home peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, on December 29, 2016. Peggy was born Peggy Arlene Preston on October 3, 1939 in Denison, Texas to Willis and Virginia Preston. She was a 1957 graduate of Denison High School where she was a feature twirler and served her Senior year as Drum Major. Peggy was also proudly named Miss Denison in 1957.

After graduation, Peggy moved on to Ft. Worth where she attended, and graduated from Texas Christian University (TCU) with a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. While at TCU, Peggy became a proud member of the Delta Delta Delta (Tri-Delt) Sorority. She was a fiercely loyal Horned Frog alum and benefactor her entire life. Upon graduation from TCU in 1961, she taught First Grade for a year in Richardson Texas. Upon completion of that year, Peggy married her college sweetheart Charley Powell of Gatesville. Charley and Peggy moved to Belton in the summer of 1962 where she became a homemaker and began raising a family while also helping her husband build a successful business as proprietor of Powell Supply Co.

Peggy was an active and loyal member of the Belton community for the remainder of her life. Her husband Charley was a former Mayor of the City of Belton from 1993 to 1999 at which time he fostered and nurtured a sister city agreement with Ebino, Japan. Peggy and Charley visited Ebino on 2 separate occasions and she enjoyed supporting this relationship as de facto “first lady” of Belton. Peggy was always actively involved in the lives of her children. She served for a time as PTA President at Leon Heights Elementary school as well as President of the city council of PTA’s for Belton. Peggy also served as the Assistant Choreographer for the Belton High School Madrigal from 1987 through 1996. She was a founding member of the Temple-Belton alumni chapter of Delta Delta Delta.

Peggy took great pride and delight in her role as wife, mother, grandmother and friend. A devoted member of the First Baptist Church of Belton, Peggy is survived by her three children, Mark Powell and his wife Julie of Dallas, Texas; Bryan Powell and his wife Mary of Dallas, Texas; and Paige Rendon and her husband Mark of Belton, Texas.

She is also survived by a brother, Gerry Preston and his wife, Mary of Frisco, Texas, and her grandchildren: Kelsey Alexandra Powell and Benjamin Harrison Powell of Dallas; Cassidy Alexandra Rendon, Blake Andrew Rendon and Alex Walker Rendon of Belton; and Charleston (Charlie) Olivia Powell of Dallas. Mrs. Powell is preceded in death by her loving husband of 53 years, Charley, and by her parents Willis and Virginia Preston of Denison.
