Peggy J. King, 87, passed away peacefully at the Otterbein Senior Community in Franklin June 5. Prior to residing at Otterbein she’d lived at Prince’s Lakes since 1969.
Peggy Finkbiner was born in Indianapolis on Dec 12, 1931 to Rev. Raymond V. Finkbiner and Elizabeth C. (Bonn) Finkbiner. She began playing as a church pianist at age 17 in Kendallville, Indiana before her father accepted a pastorate near Madison, Indiana.
She graduated from North Madison High School in 1950. In 1953 she married her high school sweetheart Fred George. During his two-year stint in Korea Peggy worked at the Jefferson County Proving Grounds near Madison.
Upon his return the couple moved to Franklin where her husband attended classes at Franklin College and the two began a family.
Over the next few decades Peggy served as a church pianist at a number of Baptist churches throughout Johnson County. She also regularly taught Sunday school and directed several Christmas pageants.
She worked for Johnson County Memorial Hospital for over 20 years in the personnel department.
She last served as a church pianist in her early 80’s at Christ Covenant Church in Edinburgh (now Christ Fellowship). Peggy’s hobbies included collecting Coca-Cola memorabilia, ceramic painting, pencil sketches and furnishing her treasured dollhouse.
Peggy was preceded in death by her father Raymond and mother Elizabeth; brother Raymond Finkbiner, Jr; husbands Fred J. George and Verlin D. King. Survivors include: brother Allen Finkbiner (Jeffersonville); son Dean George (Nashville) and daughter Dee Tracy (Butlerville); four grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.
