Peggy Mabry Chambliss died this past beautiful Sunday morning, September 23, 2012. She would have turned 93 on October 30th. She leaves behind a legacy of abundant love and generosity. Born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, she was smart and independent, had worked at the Chattanooga Free Press since she was 13 years old, writing her “Peggin’ Along” column- reporting on the social whirlwind of Chattanooga society side by side with the war news. She was president of just about everything she touched. She married Robert Nelson Chambliss, shortly after World War II. They had both patiently waited for the right one to come along and found that abiding love in each other until his death in 1964. She came to Seattle in 1983 to assume the role she seemed born for- being a wonderful grandmother “Nana” to her 2 grandchildren Ben and Emily Zulauf and the Nana for legions of children in their neighborhood. She was the epitome of southern graciousness and buttery cooking. The halls of the condominium complex where she lived for 27 years were filled with the delicious scent of her soups, her cheese biscuits, her pies. She forgot no one’s birthdays, wrote keepsake letters to all whom she cherished and brought gifts of buttery, sugary, whipped cream laden food- wrapped thickly in aluminum foil- to neighbors, family, the postmen, the hairdresser. Her southern drawl and wicked sense of humor stayed in tact even after her body declined. The spark in her eye never paled, the love of her family never faded. Her daughters Mabry De Buys and Octavia Chambliss were so blessed to have her move across the country to be close to them. She created memories for us all.
