Pedro Sergio Estay, 82 of Driggs, ID passed away on September 17, 2011 in Scottsdale, AZ. He was born May 29, 1929 in Santiago, Chile, to Jose Miguel and Rosa Estay.
Pedro was a strong man with a strong heart who fought an unexpected battle with ALS until the end. He was a loving, caring husband, father, brother, uncle, and grandfather who enjoyed his home, beautiful garden and pond, TVChile, Real Madrid, his dogs, Silver and Golden Bear, and most of all, family time.
He was an accountant in his early professional career and was the inspector for the Auditor General in Chile at a young age. He later became an exporter/importer while living in Arizona, North Carolina and California; and most recently, a builder, while living in Driggs, ID. He had an uncanny ability with math, doing complex math addition in his head. He was the kind of man everyone knew and liked. He shook everyone’s hand, from the shoe shiner and hot-dog vendor on a street corner on up, always offering a kind word and a smile.
Pedro was an athlete and loved all sports, particularly soccer and basketball. He was also a National Trap-Shooting champion. He participated in several international championships and was a member of the Chilean Olympic trap-shooting team at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Ann; sister Eliana (Armando) Vallarino of Santiago, Chile and their family; daughters Peggy (Tom) Murphy of Phoenix, AZ, Laura (Hank) Lowery of Scottsdale, AZ, and Susan Estay of Palm Desert, CA; sons Peter (Stephanie) Estay and Alex (Jackie) Estay; 11 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
Pedro was preceded in death by siblings Miguel, Rosa and Gabriela Estay; daughter
Ximenita Estay; and grandchildren Jason and Stephanie Monongye, and Alex “Bubs” Lowery.
The family thanks Hospice of the Valley for their tremendous compassion and support. Our father will be greatly missed.
