PAUL EUGENE WELLMANN, 80, Deming resident, passed away Wednesday, March 14, 2012 surrounded by his loving family at Mountain View Regional Medical Center in Las Cruces.
Paul was born December 8, 1931 in Lexington, Nebraska to Frances J. Clemmens and Henry A. Wellmann. Upon his graduation from Scottsbluff High School in 1949, he enlisted with the Navy to serve his country. Through his travels, he met Janice J. Pekula in Casper, Wyoming. Janice was working as a waitress at a local restaurant, and Paul needed some ice cream after having had some dental work.
His inability to speak gave them an opportunity to begin corresponding which led to their marriage in 1957. From this marriage three loving children were later added to complete their family. Paul was a civil engineer and spent 30 years working for and enlisted with the Air Force and the Air National Guard in Cheyenne, Wyoming. He will be remembered as an avid outdoors man who enjoyed to hunt and fish. In his youth he played well on the golf course and kept a good book by his side. He maintained a membership with the local Elks and Moose Lodge, the VFW and the American Legion. After retiring, he and Janice would spend their time traveling.
Survivors include his wife, Janice; one son, Michael(Katie) Wellmann of Salt Lake City, UT; two daughters, Laurie(Rex) Karsten of Cedar Falls, IA and Sheri(Bill) Shattuck of Deming; two brothers, Orville Wellmann of Fort Morgan, CO and Henry Wellmann of Longmont, CO; five grandchildren, Natalie(Garrett) Lawrence, Gillian(Jason) Mackie, Kristen(Mike) Landau, Kali Karsten and Steven Joyce; and two great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn Carter and Dylan Erecksen. Paul was preceded in death by his parents, and a grand-daughter, Leah Nicole Joyce.
