Paul Vilbon Guite, aged 90, passed away on December 14, 2023, in Falls Church, VA. He was born on December 2, 1933, in Waterville, Maine, to Dr. Leander Armand Guite Sr. and Gabrielle Genevieve Pomerleau Guite. 

Paul grew up with his two brothers and parents in Waterville, Maine. From a young age, he was bilingual, speaking both French and English fluently. Paul had a passion for the arts, classical music, and literature. He studied piano during his youth and developed a love for books. After graduating from St. John’s Prep School in Danvers, MA, in 1952, he initially pursued a path toward becoming a Catholic priest at Immaculate Heart Seminary in Lenox, MA, but later decided to attend college. In 1957, Paul earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Notre Dame University. 

After graduating, Paul became an English and History teacher at Gonzaga College High School in Washington, DC. He also obtained a Masters degree in History from Georgetown University in 1960. He cherished his time in the DC area but returned to New England to pursue a Master of Library Science degree from Simmons University in Boston, MA. In 1964, Paul returned to Washington, DC, and secured a position at the National Archives. He took great pride in curating the Nixon Presidency papers during his tenure. 

Paul was a lifelong member of the Catholic church. Even though he left seminary, he never left his devotion to his faith.

On November 7th, 1970, Paul married Simone Vanderhaeghe at the Holy Trinity Church in the Georgetown neighborhood of Washington, DC. They shared a love for art galleries, concerts, and literature.

Paul will be deeply missed by his surviving family members, including his sister-in-laws Linda Guite and Nancy Guite Powers, his niece Melissa Guite Mantha and her husband Sheshadri, his niece Stephanie Guite, his niece Amy Guite Greuel and her husband Greg, his nephew Matthew Lee Guite and his wife Sarah, his nephew Christopher Guite and his wife Sarah, his grandnieces Annamika, Willow, Teal, Olivia and Allison and his grandnephews Reed, Nolan, Jameson, and Luke. He was preceded in death by his father, Dr. Leander Armand Guite Sr.; his mother, Gabrielle Genevieve Pomerleau Guite; his wife, Simone Vanderhaeghe Guite; his brother, Dr. Lee Guite Jr.; and his brother, John Michael Guite.  

Paul Vilbon Guite will be remembered for his love of the arts, dedication to education, and cherished relationships with his family and friends. He leaves a legacy of intellectual curiosity and a passion for sharing knowledge.
