Paul David Meadows Sr., Age 91, of Birmingham, Alabama passed away peacefully on Tuesday August 13th 2013. He was born on August 16th 1921 in Hackneyville, Alabama. He is preceded in death by: James Zebedee Meadows, father; Mary Ophelia Holley Meadows Henderson, mother; Preston Meadows (Mahalia), brother; Dan Meadows (Mary Sue), brother; Herschel Meadows (Ro), brother; Edna Forbus, sister; Jewell McCrary (Mack), sister; Paul David Meadows Jr., son; John David Meadows, grandson. He is survived by: Jane Bainbridge Meadows, wife; Lynnette Jaxon (Jay), daughter, Eufaula, AL; Elizabeth White (Richard), daughter, Birmingham; Dan Meadows (Ingrid), son, Fauquier County, VA; Sara Meadows, daughter-in-law: Jennifer Jones (Chris), granddaughter, Auburn, AL; J.J. Jaxon (Catherine), grandson, Atlanta, GA; Chrisi Prescott (Mike), granddaughter, Albuquerque, NM; Carrie Jaxon (Alberto Arteta), granddaughter, Madrid, Spain; Paul White, grandson, Birmingham; Amy Grant (Vent), granddaughter, Birmingham; Melissa White, granddaughter, Birmingham; nine great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins. While serving his country in World War II, Paul met Jane by correspondence, and thus began a classic war- time love story whose devotion lasted 67 years. In the only home they ever shared in Forest Park (Birmingham), they began their marriage, raised four children and grew to old age together. A member of the United States Navy during World War II, he was wounded in action aboard the LST 333, receiving the Purple Heart Medal. He later participated in the D-Day invasion of France on June 6th 1944 aboard the LST 503. In 1951 he was recalled to duty, and separated from his young family, served upon the USS New Jersey in Korea. A graduate of Woodlawn High School (Birmingham) class of 1940, he began shortly thereafter a career with Southern Bell, later South Central Bell, that lasted 43 years. A member of Woodlawn Presbyterian Church, (now Trinity Presbyterian Church) for 67 years, he served as a deacon, elder and member of the session for many years. Paul was a devoted member of East Lake Masonic Lodge 480 for 66years. He volunteered as an Assistant Scout Master and later Scout Master of Boy Scout Troop 111 at Avondale Methodist Church (Birmingham) for over six years. He loved traveling, fishing, photography and camping in the great outdoors. Over many decades, he and Jane traveled the highways and back roads of America camping out with friends and family in the natural world that he loved so much.
