Paul Donald Herring died Tuesday, July 5, 2016, at St. Vincent’s Hospice, Indianapolis. The son of Paul Dominic and Meta Horton Herring, he was born May 26, 1937, at Clinton, North Carolina. After graduating from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, he attended the University of Chicago receiving master’s and doctorate degrees with honors. Don joined the University of Chicago faculty following his graduation and received both a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship and a Fulbright Fellowship for study at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland.

In 1971 he became Chair of the English Department at Wabash College, and later served as Chair of the Humanities Division and as Dean of the College from 1993 through 1999. Herring was the first holder of the Collett Chair in Rhetoric at Wabash and was elected an Honorary Alumnus of the College. He also served as President of the Indiana Association of Departments of English, was a member of the National Council of Teachers of English and in 1991 was elected Chair of the Indiana Humanities Council. Over the years Don served on numerous boards including the General Lew Wallace Study and North Central Health Services, a grant making board for projects that relate to health and healthy communities in western Indiana. Formally retired in 2007, Don continued teaching a senior level class on George Bernard Shaw through this spring.

Don is survived by wife Johanna Raper Herring of Fayetteville, North Carolina; two children, Paul Edgerton Herring of Newport News, Virginia, and Johanna Herring Curl of Longview, Texas; three grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Brother Elbert N. Herring and Elbert N. Herring Jr. are deceased.

Other survivors include: Mrs. Elbert N. Herring, Myrtle Beach; Miles McP. Herring, wife Tammy, Murrell’s Inlet, and their children, Richmond Virginia and Ashley and Ted Farley, Richmond, VA. . Also, John E. Raper of Fayetteville, NC, Also, John Raper, Jr. of Fayetteville; Sarah Raper and Antoine Larenaudie, Paris, France, and their children; Anne Raper and Dave Cooper and their children of Raleigh; and Mary Allison and Locke Raper and son of Raleigh.
