Hartman, Dr. Paul Donald
Known by his friends as “Don”, passed away Saturday January 9, 2016 in Scottsdale, Arizona at the age of 70. He was born in Washington D.C. on August 18, 1945 to Paul Hartman and Bonnie Jean MacDonald Hartman. He is the beloved husband of Dr. Freda Zuzan Hartman whom he married in 1986, a devoted brother to Dr. Sandra Hartman Malone, and loving father to his canine child Kodi. Don graduated from Wilson High School in Washington D.C. and then went to college at Purdue University where he earned a bachelor’s degree in engineering. He later earned a master’s degree and a Ph.D. degree from Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute, now New York University. Starting his career at Bell Labs, he worked at IBM for a number of years before moving to Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Lab, where he had a distinguished career over more than twenty-five years as a Group Supervisor and Chief Scientist in the field of sonar systems and signal processing. During his career, he was on the faculty of Howard University in Washington D.C. and then later at Johns Hopkins University, teaching electrical engineering at both institutions. Don enjoyed traveling to exotic destinations and his travels took him all over the world. Don was a golf enthusiast and truly enjoyed playing the game and being out on the golf course. He started playing golf as a child, was a member of the Purdue Golf team, and later won a Senior Flight Championship at Argyle Country Club in Maryland. After moving from Maryland to Scottsdale in 2006, Don became an enthusiastic fan of the Arizona Cardinals, Arizona Diamondbacks, Phoenix Suns and Arizona Coyotes and enjoyed attending their games.
