Paul David Leiner, 88, Galesburg, died at 10:39 a.m. Thursday, October 16, 2008 at Methodist Hospital, Peoria.
He was born December 17, 1919 at his maternal grandparent’s farm west of Chillicothe, Illinois, the son of George Albert and Maggie Elizabeth Foster Leiner. He and Katharine (Kay) Young were married June 25, 1950 by her father, Rev. W. Harvey Young at the Thawville Congregational Church in Thawville, Illinois.
Paul is survived by his daughter Jean and husband Frank Vickers, a son George Harvey and wife Virginia Leiner, daughters Barbara Joan and husband George Waldorf, Margaret (Meg) and husband Chris Walker and daughter Elizabeth Jane and Howard Johnson, six grandsons, one granddaughter, and four great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife Katharine on August 12, 2003, his brother, Robert E., his sister, Dorothy, and his grandson William Paul Vickers.
Paul served during WWII in the United States Navy Hospital Corps as a Pharmacist’s Mate, primarily at Base Hospital #4, Wellington, New Zealand. In 1950 he received the B.S. degree in Pharmacy from the University of Iowa, College of Pharmacy. His career in pharmacy in central Illinois, including North Side Drugs in Galesburg and Leiner Drugs in Toulon, continued until his retirement in some 40 years later.
Paul and Katharine were members of the Congregational Church for 33 years, Paul serving as a deacon and Katharine as moderator. After living many years in their home in Galesburg, they retired to Seminary Estates, also in Galesburg. After Kay’s passing, Paul relocated to Independence Village, and then to Liberty Estates, Peoria, to be near his daughter Margaret (Meg) Walker and her family.
