Patrick “Pat” Holden Sherwood, age 87, passed away Saturday August 6, 2011 at home with his family. Patrick was born March 25, 1924 in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada and resided in Chelsea, Maine with his parents Rollo Paxton and Margaret (nee McCreary) Sherwood.

During World War II, Patrick proudly served with the Combat Military Police for the United States Marine Corps. for 20 months at Guam in the South Pacific and was a member of the Marine Corp. League. Upon his return he went on to become a Union Iron Worker before embarking on his 35 year career as an insurance agent with State Farm in Burlington, NJ. Mr. Sherwood was a police officer for the Burlington Twp. Police for 34 years, where he served as a volunteer and commander of the Specials Unit.

Aside from his professional career and civic duties, Patrick held membership in the Free and Accepted Masons, with dual membership in the Hiram Lodge #180 in South Portland, Maine and Lodge #32, Burlington, NJ. He was also a member of the Crescent Shrine and a past Noble Grand with the Odd Fellows Lodge. Pat was an avid hunter, skier and golfer. He enjoyed his longstanding memberships at both the Burlington County Country Club and the Italian American Roma Club.

In addition to his parents, Pat was predeceased by his wife of 45 years Rosemary (nee Devlin) Sherwood, his son Lt. Peter P. Lanish, both of Burlington and eleven siblings; Rolla, Cecil, Alta, Clive, Olga, Lloyd, Arthur, Guthrie, Waldo, Ira and Reginald. He is survived by his children; Sarah Herman of Gibbstown, NJ, Daniel (Carol) Sherwood of Rangely, ME, Kathleen (Edward) Pietras of Mickleton, NJ, Michael (Maryann) Sherwood of North Carver, MA, Patrick Sherwood, Jr. of Hanson, MA and Deborah Lee Sherwood of London, England. He is also survived by fourteen grandchildren, twenty nine great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
