Sports fan supreme
Patricia Hermes passed away unexpectedly and very bravely at Yale New Haven Hospital on Wednesday January 9, 2013. Pat was born March 31, 1937 in New Rochelle, New York to the late Frank Hermes, Jr. and Marietta (Jordan) Hermes. She moved with her family to New Canaan in 1951, graduated from New Canaan High School in 1954 and attended Connecticut College for Women.
Pat worked at Famous Artist’s school in Westport prior to a long term (30 year) employment at Time Inc. in New York City. Upon early retirement in 1993, Pat traded her East 79th St. apartment for a house on a dirt road in Roxbury where she, her mother, sister, a golden retriever and 3 horses co-existed quite nicely. While living in Roxbury, Pat served on the planning and zoning commission. Since 1999, Pat had lived with her sister at Woodlake in Woodbury.
Pat was the ultimate sports fan. Born a fan of the Yankees and football Giants, she also followed the NY Rangers from “nosebleed” seats in the old Garden. Pat watched with equal enthusiasm, the US Open, Masters, Breeder’s Cup, Stanley Cup, Davis Cup and even the America’s Cup Races. Her birthday celebration was often delayed during March madness, being a huge fan of both the UCONN men’s and women’s basketball teams. Just to round out her life, she loved golden retrievers, soft baked cookies, the NY Times crossword puzzles and anything Ella Fitzgerald sang.
Pat leaves her sister June Murphy of Woodbury, her brother, Frank Jordan Hermes and his wife Cindie or Williamsburg, VA, nephew James Hermes and his wife Lisa of Silver Spring, MD, niece Elizabeth Hermes Riemersma and her husband Kier of Dubai, United Arab Emirates, great nephews Jack and Taylor Hermes and Rocky Riemersma, five cousins and many good friends.
