Patricia Deveney Hartmeier, of Littleton, Colorado, passed peacefully at Porter Hospice on Friday, October 31, 2014, at the age of 85.
Patricia was born on January 16, 1929 in Chicago, Illinois to Walter T. and Florence Deveney (Doran). She grew up on the south side Chicago neighborhood of Beverly where she cheered on the Chicago Bears, Chicago White Sox and the Fightin’ Irish with her older brother Walter D. Deveney. Patricia graduated from high school in 1947 and attended Barat College of the Sacred Heart in Lake Forest, Illinois until 1949 when she left school to marry Donald John Merrion, who was also a Chicago native.
Patricia and Donald settled in the Chicago suburb of Country Club Hills where three of their four children, Sandra, Donald, Jr., and Jennifer, were born. Soon, the young parents grew tired of big-city life and, in 1964, moved their budding family to Farmington, New Mexico, and, then, to Littleton, Colorado in 1965. Shortly after their arrival to Littleton, Patricia and Donald welcomed their fourth child, Matthew, into the world.
In 1977, Donald, Sr. passed away unexpectedly at the age of 50. Patricia re-married in 1980 to Jerome Richard Hartmeier, and the couple lived happily until Jerry developed brain cancer and passed away in 1983.
Although Patricia was a stay-at-home mother for most of her life, she worked as a volunteer at Swedish Medical Center for many years before retiring in the early 1990’s. She was passionate about keeping active in her golden years, and could be found working out at the Goodson Recreation Center in Littleton almost every day of the week.
Patricia’s family and friends will remember her as someone who touched people’s lives with her wonderful sense of humor, joyful spirit, and big heart.
Patricia is survived by her four children and eight grandchildren, including Chris and Mike VanHouten; Jeff, Christa, and Jacob Merrion; Karli and Nick Gillespie; and her youngest grandchild, Joey Merrion, age 7.
