Patricia C. “Pat” Fisher, 80, of Elkhart, passed away peacefully of natural causes doing what she loved best … spending the day out with her friends and contemporaries on Wednesday morning, Sept. 28.
She was born Sept. 9, 1936, in Northport (Long Island) N.Y., to the late Herbert J. and Claudine F. (Becker) O’Hara.
She later married John A. Fisher on Oct. 12, 1955. He passed away Feb. 10, 2014.
Pat leaves behind her daughter, Donna (Lou) Szabo of Melbourne, Fla.; her son, John P. (Elise) Fisher of Boston, Mass.; grandson Kevin of Seattle, Wash.; granddaughter Katie of Brighton, Mass.; brother Herb O’Hara of Elkhart; sisters-in-law Sue (Fisher) Smith and Joy Fisher, both of Elkhart; nieces and nephews Erin O’Hara-Jones of Christchurch, New Zealand, Shawn O’Hara of Texas and Robin (Ferrell) Chupp, Cathy (Ferrell) Tovey, Dawn (Fisher) Porter, Jackie (Fisher) Wiseman, Chris Fisher, Jennifer (Fisher) Garcia, Scott Fisher, Stacy Smith-Bieber, and Derrick Smith, all of Elkhart.
She received her bachelor and master degrees from Indiana University and was a retired teacher for the Elkhart Community Schools.
In her youth, she enjoyed performance roller skating. She and her husband enjoyed camping with their children as they were growing up, camping in 48 of 50 states.
She and her husband spent a summer teaching at the Navajo Reservation in Rock Point, Ariz.
They also took archaeological trips to Mexico City; Peru, South America (Machu Picchu); Ayers Rock, Australia; and New Zealand.
One family highlight was a 50th anniversary trip to Hawaii in October 2005, where she and John renewed their wedding vows on a beach on Kauai, in the company of their children and grandchildren.
Most recently, she celebrated her 80th birthday, Sept. 9, by playing on the beach in Florida with her children and grandchildren.
She was a faithful parishioner of St Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, and a member of the Rosary Society. She was also a proud member of the William Tufts Chapter of the DAR, New Horizons Band, TRIAD, Friendly Pioneers, Council on Aging Life Enrichment Program, Elkhart County Historical and Computer Genealogy societies, Church Community Services, AARP and the IU Alumni Association.
For more than 20 years she served her community by being a quarterly blood donor, an Annual CROP Hunger Walk volunteer Coordinator (retired) and an AARP Driver Safety Program volunteer instructor (retired) as well.
