Patricia Galloway Maddox, 83 of Mobile, passed away at her home on Monday, August 28. To friends in Coffee County, where she lived for nearly 50 years, she was known as Pat. To family and friends in Pike County, where she was born, and elsewhere, she was known as Trish. And to her beloved grandchildren, she was Mama Trish.
Patricia was born at Tarentum in Pike County on March 8, 1934 to Davis Wheeler Galloway and Leo Maughon Galloway. She was the youngest daughter among seven children. She is survived by her brother, John Galloway and wife Ann, of Lafayette, LA. Preceding her in death is her infant daughter, Sherry Denise Maddox, her sister, Doris Stewart and husband Roscoe; brothers Morris Galloway and wife Mary Dean, Colbert Galloway, Davis Wilbur Galloway and wife Gertrude, and infant brother Noah Galloway.
She is also survived by daughters Cynthia Maddox and Jill Beard of Mobile; son Keith Maddox of Mobile; daughter-in-law Suzi Brunson Maddox; son-in-law Kerry Beard; grandchildren Jordan Elkins; Blake and Marlee Maddox; Kade, Kali and Tyler Beard; dozens of nieces, nephews and cousins; and countless friends. In particular, she was adored by the residents of Cottonwood Senior Community, where she lived for 10 years.
She graduated from Brundidge High School in 1952 and was secretary-treasurer of her senior class. For more than 30 years, Patricia devoted herself as a loving mother, homemaker and, as one niece described, “the best baker ever.” Then, at age 53, she enrolled as a student at Enterprise State Junior College, along with her daughter Jill. Soon afterwards she went to work at JC Penney, where she became a fixture in the children’s department until her retirement.
Even though she was a “daddy’s girl,” Patricia inherited her colorful personality and most of her unforgettable traits from her mother. The Irish feistiness, patience (lack of), meticulous housekeeping and talents as a cook were always present.
