Patricia Ailene Bassett, age 87, most recently a resident of St. Johns, and distinguished Lieutenant Colonel of the United States Army Nurse Corps, died on May 16, 2024.Pat was born on December 8, 1936, one of seven children born to Patrick and Adah (Riddle) Gallagher. She was the 1954 Valedictorian of the Lake Odessa High School and studied at Central State University. Pat centered her life around serving others, and began her lifelong career as a nurse through training at St. Lawrence Hospital School of Nursing in Lansing, Michigan. She worked for a time at Wayne County Hospital before enlisting with the United States Army Nurse Corps in 1971, serving in Vietnam and Korea. She was a pioneer and inspiration for women in the military. She was highly skilled, had a drive to succeed and continue her education, was a leader in her work and in her family, and proud of her service.Pat was assigned to work at the Pentagon in Washington DC and it was there where she met the love of her life, Dennis Bassett, who had a distinguished military career himself. They were best friends and partners for over fifty years.
