Born Sept 3,1941 in Steubenville, Ohio, he graduated from Capital University, Columbus Ohio in 1964 and Trinity Seminary in 1968. He was ordained as a Lutheran pastor and subsequently entered the U.S. Army as a chaplain in 1971. Chaplain Smith served 20 years, retiring as a Lt. Col. in 1991.
