Paolo Messina, the beloved husband of Maria (Migliorati) Messina, died peacefully and with dignity after a long illness, in the comfort of his home on Friday, August 30, 2013, with his family at his side. He was cared for at home by his wife, children, and grandchildren, along with hospice. Born in Canicattini Bagni, province of Siracusa, Sicily, Italy, on October 24, 1925, he was the son of Maria and Giovanni Messina. He married Maria (Migliorati) 54 years ago in Italy, and together they raised their four children in New Britain for 40 years before moving to Newington in 1998. Paolo was employed by the Fafnir Bearing Company until his retirement in 1988. He loved to read and enjoyed spending time with his family, working in his garden, roasting peppers, enjoying his wife’s home-made pizza and spinach pies and teaching his family how to make his famous homemade ricotta. For many years, every Sunday morning he would dress in a suit and tie, shine his shoes and spend a few hours at the Generale Ameglio Society in New Britain, drinking espresso with his friends and playing cards, before sitting down to Sunday dinner with his family. Besides his wife Maria, he is also survived by his four children, their spouses and grandchildren. Giovanni and Mary Messina and their children, Carla, Angela, Colin and Brooke; Puba and Frank Niro and their children Elizabeth, Vanessa and Michael; Paula and Paul Calo and their children Gina and Paulie; and Tina and Michael Lenares and their children Joey and Diana. He also leaves a sister Concettina Messina in Catania, Italy; and a special niece Georgianna (Croteau) Sloate. Paolo’s family would also like to extend a special thank you to his caregiver Sonia for the loving care she provided to Paolo and Maria. He was pre-deceased by two brothers Salvatore and Giuseppe, and a sister Alisa.
