Oscar “Gene” Comer, 77, of Newton died on Monday, May 6, 2019 at McCann Village in Newton.

Gene, the son of Oscar “Henry” and Bessie (Harris) Comer, was born on June 21, 1941 in California, Missouri. He grew up in Missouri and later moved to Newton, where he graduated from Newton High School in 1959. He served in the United States Air Force for 8 years, before moving to Omaha, Nebraska. Gene was united in marriage with Holly Large on May 17, 2000 in Omaha. They later moved back to Iowa living in rural Newton.

Gene had worked as a self-employed carpenter for most of his years. He was a member of Cornerstone Bible Fellowship and enjoyed carpentry work, creating model airplanes and making keychains and ink pens out of wood.

Gene is survived by his children; Reuben (Val) Comer of Knoxville, Gary (fiancé April Lang) Comer of Knoxville, Bill (Nancy) Comer of Nebraska, and Buddy D. (Sandy) Comer of Nebraska; stepchildren, Mich and Mindy Volk; siblings, Mildred (Archie) Rawlins of Newton, Judy (Dale) Vander Linden of Monroe, Carol Noe of Newton, Steve (Pam) Comer of Newton, and Pat (John) Myers of Mingo; grandchildren, Cord Comer, Dalton Comer, Justin (Amanda) Comer, Joshua Comer, Chelsie (Dan) Stroupe, Carter Lang, Kelli, Traci, Eric and Lauren; and many great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Holly Comer; daughter-in-law, Wendy Comer; grandson, Christopher Comer; and great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Comer.
