Mr. Odell “OD” Pugh, Jr. was born in Chatham County, North Carolina on January 12, 1943 to Odell Pugh and Beatrice Smith Pugh, who preceded him in death. After an extended illness, he departed this life on Saturday evening, August 25, 2018 at Laurels of Chatham Nursing Home in Pittsboro, North Carolina. He was also preceded in death by six sisters, three brothers, and one step-son.
In 1968, at age 25, Odell married Olivia Headen Goldston, who was 42, and a widow with seven young children. Despite their age difference, they had a strong marriage that lasted for 49 years until Olivia’s death in 2017/ Though the age of Olivia’s older children was close to his own, Odell was a good provider and the relationship was, indeed, that of a father.
Early in his life, Odell attended Union Grove A.M.E. Zion Church with his family. He also attended Horton High School in Pittsboro, North Carolina. For many years, he worked for, and later retired from Ram Tech in Ramseur, North Carolina.
Odell was a hard worker both on his job and at home. He loved the outdoors. He loved gardening. He kept their yard immaculate. He and Olivia planted a huge garden each year until his health failed. People from the neighborhood and beyond knew that they could come to OD and Olivia’s house and get fresh vegetables.
Odell leaves to mourn: six step-children, Charlie Goldston (Mildred) of Reynoldsburg, Ohio, Neriah Edwards-Boone, Pittsboro, North Carolina, Larry Goldston (Lillie), Goldston, North Carolina, Rev. Jesse Goldston, Theressa Goldston, and Steve Goldston (Wendy) of Siler City, North Carolina. He also leaves one sister, Virginian Degraphenreidt, Pittsboro, North Carolina; one brother, Ernest Pugh (Laura Jean), Siler City, North Carolina. From his step-children he leaves twelve grandchildren, who affectionately called him, “Papa D.” One of the grandchildren, Georgiana Vargas, gained a special place in his heart. Georgiana was one of his caretakers in the nursing home, even though he was not her patient. When others were not able to, Georgiana was able to get him to do almost anything. Every day she would tell him, “I love you.” In his quiet spirit, on the day before his death, he said to her, “I love you.” He also leaves a host of other relatives and friends.
PSALMS 23
A Psalm of David
The Lord is my shepard; I shall not want.
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures:
he leadeth me beside the still waters.
He restoreth my soul; he leadeth me in the paths
of righteousness for his name’s sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the
shadow of death, I will fear no evil:
for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
Thou preparest a table before me in the presence
of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil;
my cup runneth over.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
all the days of my life:
and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.
