Bath- William (Bill) John Smart, 85, of Andrews Road died peacefully in his sleep Wednesday, February 22, 2017 at Maine Medical Center in Portland, in the presence of his loving wife Celestia.
He was born in Danforth on January 4, 1932 a son of George Edward and Clara (Connolly) Smart.
He attended schools in Danforth and Bath Maine, entering the United States Air Force during the Korean War. On June 29, 1963 he married Mary Jeannette Babine at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, in Bath and dedicated his life to supporting his family and friends while raising two children. He worked for many years as a self-employed carpenter, a foreman at Pre-Cast Concrete of Maine and finally retiring as a ship fitter at Bath Iron Works after 20+ years of service.
After losing his first wife to cancer, January 7th, 1986 he was blessed to find love again, marrying Celestia Harkins Rice on April 23, 2005. Bill cherished the love and support of his wife Celestia, and the great joy their union and the union of their blended families brought him. He was a loving, caring and giving man who loved and enjoyed the unique and special bond he held with all his family; including his siblings, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
He was a lifetime member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, the Bath Lodge of Elks, the Knights of Columbus and the American Legion.
He is survived by his wife, Celestia Harkins Rice Smart of Bath, three sons, David W. Smart and his wife Tracy of Woolwich, Steven Rice and his wife Nicole of Oakland, and Milford Rice of Bath, two daughters, Melissa J. (Smart) Ferrucci of Bath and Gloria Asalone and her husband Barry of Hampden, two brothers, Ralph Smart of Orono and Morris Smart of Mystic, CT, two sisters, Marie Balint and her husband Albert of Falls Church, VA and Shirley Handler of Long Island, NY, ten grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
