William “Bill” Fredrick Bernstein, 90 of Gatzke, MN died, Tuesday October 4, 2005 in the Roseau Area Hospital. He was born to Albert S. and Anna A. (Sefert) Bernstein July 13, 1915 on a farm in Golden Valley Township, Marshall County near Mud Lake. The family moved to a farm in Rollis Township in 1924. Bill attended school in the Bungalow school for a few years and later continued his education in the Rollis School in Rollis Township. William “Bill” Bernstein was united in marriage to Mathilda “Tillie” Kavanaugh on November 3, 1937 in Westhope, ND. They lived on a farm near Souris, ND for five and one half years. Bill and Tillie then moved to the Bernstein farm near Gatzke in 1943 where they have since resided. Bill was a long time dairy farmer who continued milking cows until his retirement. He loved to sing and had a fine voice, neighbors recall hearing him yodeling over the sound of his tractor as he worked his fields. He never tired of hunting, fishing and trapping. He ardently pursued these activities until his recent ill health forced their curtailment. In his younger years he played amateur baseball on teams in North Dakota and Minnesota and was a Minnesota Twins fan. He was preceded in death by his parents, a baby sister, two brothers Glenn and LeRoy and two sons Gary and Lynn. Bill is survived by Tillie, his wife of 68 years; a daughter, Mary Ann (Howard) Lunsetter of Gatzke; three sons, Roy (Doris) of Williston, ND; Tim (Sandy) of Grygla, MN; Tom of Gatzke; eight grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren; one sister, Anna Rose (Glenn) Evans of Bottineau, ND and several nieces and nephews.
