William David “Bill” Murphy, age 72, of Felton, DE died November 16, 2017 in Philadelphia, PA after a courageous 4-1/2 year battle against skin and bladder cancer. He was 72.
Born on June 30, 1945 in Easton, MD, he was the son of the late Charles William Murphy and Cathell Charlotte Harris. He worked for 55 years as a home improvement contractor, owning his own business for 15 years. He was a 1964 graduate of North Caroline High School, Denton, MD and served in the Maryland Army National Guard. Mr. Murphy is survived by his wife, Margaret Rose “Peggy” Smith whom he married on September 9, 1967 at Christ Episcopal Church in Denton, MD. They had just celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.
Mr. Murphy is survived by his nieces and nephews whom he considered his children and their families: Carolyn Louise James of Culloden, WV, Debra Susan James of Charleston, WV, Teri Lynn Griffith of Denton, MD, Paul Albert Smith, Jr. of Easton, MD, and Robert Allen Smith, Jr. of Federalsburg, MD; his cousins: Ernest T. Harris of Denton, Mary Mortimer of Vacaville, CA, and Helen Roberts of Oregon; and his sisters-in-law: Kathy Smith of Bruceton Mills, WV and Barbara Bell of Denton. He is also survived by extended family members and friends spread across the country. He enjoyed woodworking, taking care of his home and yard, watching wrestling, going to Myrtle Beach, and listening to country music (particularly the older performers). He was also a collector of nautical items, beer steins/shot glasses, and railroad-related items.
