Virginia L. (Dougherty) Crockett

October 30, 2014

Westbrook – Virginia L. (Dougherty) Crockett, 89, of Portland, passed away on October 30, 2014 at the Springbrook Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Westbrook. She was born in Portland on September 14, 1925, a daughter of Elmer and Elizabeth (Smith) Dougherty. She grew up in Portland, graduating from Deering High School.

Jinny worked for 30 years at Zayre’s on Brighton Ave. in Portland and also demonstrated beauty products for Porteous, Mitchell & Braun when she was younger. She was involved in many family and community activities, serving as a den mother for her boys’ Cub Scout groups, teaching Sunday School at Clark Memorial Church in Portland and served as a crossing guard for many years at Longfellow Elementary School.

Jinny was loved by everyone who met her and she loved everyone she met unconditionally and forever. She could make a new friend with anyone she met. Her memory for people and their stories was astounding and those closest to her reaped the benefits of her delightful storytelling. Before she left her apartment for the last time, many of the kids from the project made a point to stop in say hello to the woman they all called “Grandma.” She shared her amazing spirit and love of life with all those blessed to know her and that spirit will shine through all of us who loved her so.

Jinny was pre-deceased by her parents and her husband, John “Duddy” Crockett. She is survived by her two sons; Michael Crockett and his wife Lisa Stathoplos and Jack Crockett; her grandchildren; Matthew Crockett, Joshua Crockett, Cassandra Peavey, Brian Crockett, Robert Crockett, Michael Crockett, and twelve great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister Helen Foss and brothers Carl Dougherty and his wife Arlene, Robert Dougherty and his wife Evangaline, and William Dougherty and his wife Lynn.
