Victor Raymond “Gusty” Wirkkula age 86 of Hibbing died Wednesday, November 13, 2013 in the Cornerstone Villa of Buhl. He was born December 27, 1926 in International Falls, MN the son of William and Anna (Anderson) Wirkkula. Vic married Shirley Jean Mattson on April 15, 1953 in Hibbing and was a longtime Hibbing resident. He was a US Army Veteran of WWII, and was employed by US Steel for 43 years. Vic was an avid hunter, and longtime, active Hibbing Rifle and Pistol Club member, and was the winning pitcher in the 1961 Minnesota Class AA Fast pitch tournament.
Vic is survived by sons: Dale (Renae) Wirkkula of Paynesville, MN, Dave (Jayne) Wirkkula of Hibbing, and Darrell Wirkkula of Hibbing; grandchildren: Jeremy (Michelle) Wirkkula, Rachel Wirkkula and Catherine (Brad) Duthie; great-grandchildren: Cody, Austin, and Kylie Wirkkula and Kira and Chase Westphal; siblings: William Wirkkula, Jr. of Hibbing, Anna Mae (Karl) Summers of Britt, and George (Kathleen) Wirkkula of Kansas City, MO; numerous nieces and nephews, extended family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 53 years: Shirley; daughter: Vickie Jean; and siblings: Norman Wirkkula, Lillian Marino, and Betty Jean Campbell.
