Vernon W. ” Bill” Everett, Jr.

November 18, 1920

December 4, 2015

Vernon W. “Bill” Everett Jr, 95, passed peacefully from this world on December 4, 2015. He was born November 18, 1920 in Portland, Maine to Vernon W. Everett, Sr. and Helen Sherry Everett. The family moved to Falmouth after Bill’s graduation from Deering High School in 1938. There he met and married Joyce C. O’Brien in 1943. They had two daughters, Ann Elizabeth and Susan Carol.

Bill served in Germany in WWII, 78th Infantry, Lightning Division, attaining the rank of Sargent. He was a dedicated and highly esteemed worker at American Hoist and Derrick, Thomas Laughlin Division in Portland both before and after WWII, until his retirement in 1985. He was a Free Mason, a member of the American Legion, and a Falmouth Volunteer Fireman and Certified Rescue volunteer. He also belonged to the Friends of the Kotzschmar Organ, the American Society of Tool and Manufacturing Engineers, and he cleared trails for the Appalachian Mountain Club. His passions were hiking, skiing, beach-combing, trail-blazing, airplanes, and a few good dogs. He loved challenges; if something was broken or worn out, he could be depended upon to repair it to better-than-new condition, often machining replacement parts in his extensive workshop.

After the death of his wife, Joyce, in 1986, he married Barbara Tolman Darwin of Derry, NH and Falmouth, ME. They enjoyed 27 years of active retirement with family and dear friends. They spent part of every summer on Matinicus Island with daughter Ann and her husband, John, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

His loving wife Barbara followed him into the afterlife on December 12, 2015.

He is survived by his sister Phyllis Mayo of Portland, daughter Ann E. Mitchell and husband John J. Mitchell of Matinicus, ME, daughter Susan E. Swan and husband Scott L. Swan of Glenrock, WY, 5 grandchildren: Gregory H. Mitchell and wife Shoshanna of Lancaster, NH, Sarah L. Mitchell of Rockland, ME, Geoffrey E. Mitchell of Falmouth, ME, Erin L. Swan and husband Chris Grassi of Portland, ME, and Fraser L. Swan of Glenrock, WY. In addition, he is survived by 9 great-grandchildren. He was pre-deceased by a sister, Viola Hilton of Raymond, ME.
