Vernon Delford Saxhaug, prominent area attorney, age 88, died Tuesday, March 15, 2016 peacefully in his home. He was born January 8, 1928 in Biwabik, the son of Harry “Pat” and Ruth (Orfald) Saxhaug; was a graduate of Virginia Roosevelt High School and earned his Law Degree from the University of Minnesota. Vernon married Marlys Mae Eckert on March 22, 1952 in Amery Wisconsin. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War and had played international basketball while in the Army. He returned to Virginia in 1957 and was employed as an attorney with John Manthey and Ralph Harvey. He then founded Saxhaug, Stall and Stephenson. In 1974, through merger, Vernon became one of the founding partners in the Trenti Law Firm. Throughout his career, Vernon served as legal counsel for the Virginia School District and various Range Municipalities. He was a member of the Virginia Masonic Lodge # 264 AF&AM, The Elks Lodge, the Moose Lodge; and an active member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Virginia. Vernon served as President of the Norwest Bank Board, served on the Virginia Planning and Zoning Commission, the Lake Fourteen Club, The Little Johnson Lake Association, and on the Apache-Wells AZ Community Board as a legal advisor. Vernon’s greatest joy came from time spent with his family, whom he cherished dearly.

Vernon is survived by his wife of 63 years: Marlys; children: Sherry (Jeff) Coughlin, Aurora, MN, Deborah Saxhaug, Inver Grove Heights, MN, Mark Saxhaug, Britt, MN, Karen Saxhaug Walden (Jim Walden), Maple Grove, MN, Bradford Saxhaug (Christine Jones), Virginia, MN, and Eric Saxhaug of Ely Lake; grandchildren: Briana Coughlin, Ashley Coughlin (Joe Walli), Kacie Coughlin, Dillon Saxhaug, Lauren Saxhaug Carlson, Adam Saxhaug (Tiffany Austad), Kiersten Saxhaug, Derek Walden, Jacob Walden, Samuel Walden, Samantha (Mike) Irish, Jessica (Pat) Mitsch, William Jones (Lindsey Nehiba), Alexandra Saxhaug, Alex Rebholz, and Connor Saxhaug; great-grandchildren: Jamison Saxhaug Anderson, Logan Irish, Odin Taylor, Karson Saxhaug Lentsch, River Coughlin, Brady Mitsch, Jace Walli, and Eliza Irish; sister: Harriett (Roy) Tucker of Springboro, OH; Special family members; Joyce Garcia and Michael Skinner; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter: Karen Marie Walden; and a brother William in infancy.
